Tunisia is a country in northern Africa. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea in the north and the Sahara desert in the south-east. Tunisia has a more than three thousand years old history. During this long period of time, Tunisia has seen a multitude of civilaziations, such as the Punic, Roman, Vandals, Byzantines and later the Berber and Arabs. Urbanism is as old as its culture and has been well developed in cities like Carthage, Tunis, Kairouan, Mahdia, Sousse, Monastir and Sfax.

Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is one of the most beautiful Mediterranean areas and offers a unique combination of nature and culture. The summer school will take place at Hammamet-Yasmine. Hammamet is a town at the Gulf of Hammamet located around 70 km south too Tunis and 90 km too Sousse. Due to its beaches it is a popular destination for swimming and water sports.

Sfax is located close to the Mediterranean sea in the south of Tunisia, 270 km of Tunis. The city was founded in 849 on ruins of the Roman city Taparura. Sfax has a population of around 340000 and is the second largest city of Tunisia. The main economic activities of Sfax are industry, agriculture, fishing and trade.

Tunisia, at its independance (1956), has focused its priorities on education, social development and women emancipation (women became equal to men in law in 1956).
